LESSON SIX 

A LETTER TO OUR PEN-FRIENDS IN ENGLAND 

School 96, Moscow, 

12th November, 1964.1 

Dear boys and girls, 

Thank you very much for your interesting letter. Now we know something about life in an English school. 

In your letter you ask us to tell you what Soviet people do on the 7th of November. The 7th of November, you know, is the anniversary2 of the Great October Socialist3 Revolution.

Well, on the 7th of November we always get letters and telegrams from our friends and from our uncles, aunts and cousins. Everybody sends letters and telegrams before the holiday. This year our class sent a letter in English to our English teacher. 

In every large town in our country there is a demonstration in the streets. In small places there is a meeting in the square. In Moscow,

our capital, there is, of course, a great demonstration to Red Square. Some of us go to the demonstration with our parents, some go into the streets to see it, and others see it on TV.1 

In the evening many people go for a walk in the streets. There are flags and millions of coloured lights2 in all the streets and on the houses. Young people sing and dance in the streets and squares. You can see films in the squares too, or listen to songs and stories. 

In Moscow many people like to go to Red Square. The Kremlin3 is always very beautiful on the 7th and 8th of November. Everybody goes to see the coloured lights on the Lenin Library and on the post-office in Gorky Street. Some people like to take a bus or the Metro to the Lenin Hills. That part of Moscow is high, and from there you can see the Moskva River and a large part of the capital. It is a very beautiful picture in the evening. 

On the 7th of November there is a salute4 in some of the largest towns in the U.S.S.R. In Moscow the salute is at nine o’clock in the evening. People try to be at a place from which they can see it well. One of the best places is near the Moskva River. From there you can see the red, green, yellow and white stars of the salute high up in the sky and then down in the dark water.

The post-office in Gorky Street. 

So you see there are many things which we can do on the 7th of November. And if you can’t see everything in one day, you can go for another walk on the 8th. That day is a holiday too, you know.
